A 15-year-old teenager escaped the attack of a bear that broke into his family's cabin in the Alpine Mountains, in the US state of Arizona. However, despite the scare, the youngster only suffered a few scratches to his face and arm.
“It could have been much worse,” his mother, Carol Edington Hawkins, told NBC News. “We still can't believe this happened, but at the same time, we're feeling very blessed.”
The incident happened on Thursday night, when the young man, Brigham, was “just relaxing” in one of the family's two cabins. According to his mother, the bear “came through the front door and attacked him in the head”.
“The front door was open to let in the fresh night air. Brigham was watching videos on YouTube and didn't realize what was happening,” she explained.
However, the young man “started screaming” when he was attacked and managed to alert his older brother, Parker, 18, who “thought it was some kind of big dog”.
“Then the bear saw Parker and started chasing him. This gave Brigham time to close the door of his cabin,” explained the mother, who added that her eldest son fled to the other cabin.
The family alerted the authorities, but when agents from the Arizona Game and Fish Department arrived, the bear was no longer at the scene. The animal was later located and shot.
