“Israel has the right to attack Hamas, and we understand that this attack killed two high-ranking Hamas terrorists. (...) But, as we have made clear, Israel must take every possible precaution to protect civilians,” said a spokesman for the White House National Security Council.
The White House added that the United States will be “actively engaged in understanding what happened”.
Hours earlier, the Israeli government had promised to investigate the attack by its military forces that killed two Hamas officials and 45 other people in a camp in Rafah, in the Gaza Strip.
“According to initial information, a fire broke out after the attack. These terrorists were hiding in the basement,” Israeli government spokesman Avi Hyman told a press conference.
“We will investigate the matter. It was really serious. Any loss of life, of civilian life, is something serious and terrible,” added Hyman, insisting that Israel continues to try to ‘limit civilian losses’.
According to Avi Hyman, the attack targeted two Hamas members responsible for “numerous attacks in Judea and Samaria”, Jewish biblical terms for the occupied West Bank.
This attack in Rafah was denounced by Egypt and Qatar, mediators in the diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire in the war that began almost eight months ago.
