Cabo Delgado. Insurgents 'Suffered Heaviest Casualties' Ever in May

"The terrorists suffered the biggest casualties of all time, hundreds and hundreds fell to the ground, they were out of action," said Nyusi.

The head of state referred to the "latest developments" in the theater of war in Cabo Delgado, when speaking at the central ceremonies of national independence day.

The insurgents suffered heavy losses when they attempted to launch a "large-scale" attack on the Mbau area, in the Cabo Delgado district, and were stopped by a joint response from Mozambican and Rwandan government forces.

"Once again, our salute to these children who work day and night to stabilize the region", said the Mozambican head of state.

Filipe Nyusi said that the rebels tried to attack Mbau, after having failed in their attempt to occupy the town of Quissanga and to spread their action to the south of the province of Cabo Delgado and to invade districts of the neighboring province of Nampula.

"In March, terrorists attacked the town of Quissanga, with some abnormal size, and the Defense and Security Forces had contact in response to these acts, so the enemy left the area and started carrying out isolated attacks", he stressed.

The head of state pointed to the terrorist attacks in the province of Cabo Delgado as a challenge to peace and security, defending national unity as an instrument for victory against armed violence in that region.

"The great challenge is to control the terrorism that is disturbing some districts of the province of Cabo Delgado, but we are convinced that if we are united, we will win", declared the Mozambican President.

Since October 2017, Cabo Delgado has faced an armed rebellion with attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist group Islamic State.

The last major attack took place on May 10 and 11, on the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred insurgents looting the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambique Defense and Security Forces.

The population of other districts of the province has reported the movement of these groups of insurgents, who cause panic as they pass, in the forests, but without any record of clashes, which happens at a time when peasants are trying to carry out harvesting work in the fields of cultivation.

The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, stated on June 16 that the action of the various defense forces made it possible to eliminate "practically all" the bases of terrorist groups operating in Cabo Delgado, who are now limited to "walking around in the bush".
