Cyril Ramaphosa, ANC candidate, was re-elected president of South Africa with the support of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Inkatha Free. Justice Raymond Zondo, who presided over the session, declared Ramaphosa as the new president after receiving 283 votes from the Assembly's 400 MPs.
Ramaphosa's re-election came a day after the ANC reached a deal with the opposition to form a coalition government. Two weeks earlier, the ANC had lost its absolute majority in Parliament for the first time since the end of Apartheid thirty years ago.
This change was the result of the population's discontent with corruption scandals, failed public policies and the worsening of economic problems and insecurity.
