The Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD), which supports the candidacy of politician Venâncio Mondlane for President of Mozambique, is holding a national march today against the exclusion of the party from the October elections, asking the Constitutional Council to annul this decision.
"We will march nationwide, except in three provinces. For organizational reasons, the march will not be held in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Gaza, at least not this Saturday," Luís Mariquel, Venâncio Mondlane's assistant and national communications and image coordinator for the CAD, told Lusa.
According to him, the CAD intends with this march to appeal to the Constitutional Council (CC) of Mozambique to annul the decision of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), which excluded the political party from the October ballot.
"The purpose [of the marches] is to make the Constitutional Council see reason. The people do not agree with the exclusion of the CAD," said Mariquel.
The peaceful march will take place in eight provinces of the country, namely Tete, Sofala, Manica and Zambézia in the centre, Nampula in the north, the city of Maputo and the provinces of Maputo and Inhambane in the south of Mozambique.
The CNE has excluded the CAD from the general elections on 9 October for not meeting the legal requirements, the electoral body announced on 18 July.
"The closed multi-name lists of candidates from the Democratic Alliance Coalition are rejected because they do not meet the legal requirements for submitting candidacies, which results in the nullity of their candidacy process", stated Paulo Cuinica, spokesperson for the CNE, when reading the decision, by consensus, on the verification of the candidacies received.
The president of the CAD, Manecas Daniel, said on Monday that he had already filed an appeal with the CC to annul this decision, in the part involving the coalition, guaranteeing that it complies with all the requirements and that it was filed within the deadlines, in addition to the fact that it had already passed the registration phase for the elections - in which it was registered -, having respected the approval of the candidate lists.
For the president of the CAD, the CNE "lied to the Mozambican people" by stating that the coalition "does not meet the requirements" to run.
"The CNE is the cause of the conflicts in Mozambique", stated Manecas, guaranteeing that, since its foundation in 2018, the CAD "has participated in all elections in the same way".
The CNE previously denied political reasons for the rejection of the CAD, arguing that the decision "is merely technical".
With this decision, Venâncio Mondlane, former member of parliament for the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, is prevented from running for another term in the Assembly of the Republic, but remains in the running for the Presidency of the Republic.
The presidential elections will take place simultaneously with the legislative elections and elections for governors and provincial assemblies on October 9.
