The crimes of kidnapping, strikes in public administration and the cost of living today dominated the speeches of the three benches of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique at the resumption of the parliament's plenary sessions, after the biannual break.
The parliamentary bench of Frelimo [Frente de Libertação de Moçambique], in the Assembly of the Republic, calls on the Government to take energetic measures to quickly stop the evils affecting the country and restore security to Mozambicans, in particular, businesspeople, investors and ordinary citizens", said the leader of the ruling party's parliamentary group, Sérgio Pantie, in reference to the wave of kidnappings that are plaguing some cities in the country.
Regarding the concerns of the health and education professional classes, who have resorted to systematic strikes, the Frelimo bench urged the executive to identify the best solutions that safeguard everyone's interests in strict obedience and observance of the law.
Sérgio Pantie warned of the risk of losing the gains that the country has achieved since independence in 1975, if the important challenges that Mozambique faces are not overcome.
Pantie criticized the prevalence of corruption, noting that the practice destroys the entire political system, as it even jeopardizes representative democracy.
"Some of these citizens make these acts completely common and, often, are not concerned about managing public affairs properly, which causes the State to become inefficient and fundamental rights are no longer enforced", he stressed.
The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, accused the Frelimo Government of perpetuating poverty, due to corruption and alleged tyranny.
"Our biggest problem is poverty and the biggest cause of this problem has a name", declared the head of the Renamo bench, Viana Magalhães, referring to the party that has governed the country for more than 49 years.
Magalhães argued that Mozambique needs "a new paradigm" so that the population can escape poverty.
The Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), the third largest party, also accused the political force in power of "serious incompetence".
"The country is not well, we need to have the courage to denounce the long and serious incompetence that has taken the country and State institutions by storm", said the leader of the MDM parliamentary group, Lutero Simango.
Simango also criticized the inability to combat kidnappings that affect some cities in the country, stressing that this type of crime is causing businesspeople to flee and unemployment to rise.
"In the last ten years, insecurity has gripped the nation. Thousands of citizens have had to flee the country, leaving their businesses because of kidnappings," he emphasized.
According to the parliamentary agenda, the session that started today includes the latest information on the state of the nation from the current President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, who leaves office in January, having reached the constitutional limit of two consecutive terms.
Frelimo dominates the Mozambican parliament with a qualified majority of 184 deputies, followed by Renamo, with 60 seats, and, finally, by MDM, with six seats.
