Robert Fico Back to Work Almost 2 Months After Assassination Attempt

Slovakia's prime minister, Robert Fico, returned to work today, almost two months after suffering an assassination attempt that led to him undergoing several operations and spending two weeks in hospital.

After being shot by a gunman outside a meeting of the Council of Ministers in the municipality of Handlova, Fico is back in office, although he still has trouble standing for long periods.

Fico has appeared in public four times since the attack by 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, who has been in custody ever since, and has been in contact with Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kalinak throughout this time.

On Monday, the Slovak Prime Minister announced that the country does not intend to end the ban on agricultural imports from Ukraine, an issue that has been dragging on for months and has provoked major protests in the Slovak sector and in other neighboring countries whose production has been endangered.

Bratislava had already explained on several occasions that the grace measure approved by the European Union (EU) for Ukrainian agricultural products was causing losses of more than 100 million euros to Slovak producers and farmers.
