Somali Army Retakes Control of Two Towns from Al-Shebab Extremists

The Somali army today managed to retake control of two towns in the Lower Juba region (south) after fighting with the Islamic extremist group Al-Shebab, military sources announced.

Somali troops, with the support of Jubaland forces, managed to recapture Harbule and Uelmaro, in the Afmadou district, in an offensive that caused "substantial losses" to the group with links to Al-Qaida, according to military statements to the Somali state news agency SONNA.

The operation took place a day after the security forces carried out an operation in Kaam Jarun, also in Lower Juba, where dozens of suspected Al-Shebab members were killed.

In recent months, Somalia has stepped up offensives against Al-Shebab with the support of local clans and militias, as part of a series of decisions taken by the President who pledged, upon taking office in May 2022, to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
