At least 25 children were killed and dozens injured in an accident involving a bus carrying Muslim worshippers celebrating the birth of the Prophet Mohammed in northern Nigeria, a road safety official said today.
On Sunday in Kaduna state, the driver of the bus carrying young Sufis from the Tijjaniyya order lost control of the vehicle before colliding with a truck, said Kabiru Nadabo, head of the road safety agency in Kaduna.
“The bus was overloaded with 63 children and the driver was speeding when he lost control and collided with an articulated lorry,” Nadabo explained.
“Fifteen of them died instantly, while 48 injured were taken to various hospitals. Ten of them died the following day, bringing the death toll to 25,” he added.
The children had come from the village of Kwandare and were on their way to the nearby town of Saminaka to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Mohammed.
Road accidents are common on Nigeria's poorly maintained roads, mainly due to speeding and disregard for traffic rules.
