Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said today that the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas is "alive and will continue to be", despite the death of its leader Yahya Sinouar in an Israeli military operation.
The death of the Hamas leader "is certainly painful for the resistance front" against Israel, "but it will not end with Sinouar's martyrdom," the ayatollah said in a statement.
Iran does not recognize the State of Israel, a sworn enemy, and has made support for the Palestinian cause a pillar of Tehran's foreign policy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Yahya Sinouar "was a shining figure of resistance and struggle" against Israel, Ali Khamenei also said.
"He faced the cruel and aggressive enemy with unwavering determination and struck it in the face with tact and courage," he added.
Yahya Sinouar is considered the architect of the Palestinian Islamist movement's unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which has since plunged the region into a bloody conflict.
On the eve of Sinouar's appointment as Hamas leader in August, Iran's supreme leader released a video of a rare meeting between the two, which dates back to 2011.
At that time, Yahya Sinouar was part of the delegation of the Palestinian Islamist movement led by Ismail Haniyeh, the former leader of the group who was killed in Tehran at the end of July, in an attack attributed to Israel, and who succeeded him.
