The US and Canada today imposed sanctions on the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, a charity that allegedly serves to raise funds for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
The Samidoun group operates in Gaza and the West Bank and has been designated a foreign terrorist organization since 1997 and a Global Terrorist organization since 2001.
Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley T. Smith explained that organizations like Samidoun "masquerade as charitable actors who claim to provide humanitarian support to those in need, but in fact divert funds for much-needed assistance to support groups terrorists.”
The sanctions now announced aim to prevent this organization and its leaders from using the US financial system and prevent US citizens from doing business with them.
"The United States is committed to working with our partners to expose and deter those who exploit humanitarian impulses for their malign goals," the U.S. State Department said, adding that this goal was shared with the government of Canada.
