US Bans Six Internet Domains Used by Russian Spies

The United States Department of Justice today issued a court order authorizing the seizure of 41 internet domains used by Russian undercover agents and their proxies to commit computer fraud and abuse in the United States.

In a statement, the department reported that the action takes place simultaneously with a civil action to restrict 66 internet domains used by the same protagonists.

According to the United States, the Russian government carried out this plan to steal confidential information from Americans, using apparently legitimate email accounts to trick victims into revealing their passwords.

The domains in question were used by hackers belonging to the "Calisto Group", an operational unit allegedly within Center 18 of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), or by representatives working for the group.

The "Calisto Group" hackers used the domains in question in an ongoing and sophisticated phishing campaign aimed at gaining unauthorized access and stealing valuable information from the computers and email accounts of the United States Government and other victims.

They attacked, among others, U.S.-based companies, former Secret Service employees, former and current Department of Defense and State Department employees, and Department of Energy personnel, according to released information.
