US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen John Ratcliffe to take over as head of the CIA - the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States. The choice was made this Tuesday.
"I look forward to John being the first person to hold our nation's two highest intelligence positions," the president-elect said in a statement released tonight, NBC News reported.
Donald Trump added that "[John] will be a fearless fighter for the constitutional rights of all Americans, ensuring the highest levels of national security and PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH."
John Ratcliffe was a former US Congressman for Texas and, according to the international press, is a name very close to Donald Trump.
A former Republican congressman from Texas, Ratcliffe served as director of national intelligence during the last year and a half of Trump's first term, leading the US government's spy agencies during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As chief intelligence officer, Ratcliffe was criticized by Democrats for declassifying damaging Russian intelligence about Democrats during the 2016 race in the closing days of the 2020 presidential election, even though he acknowledged it might not be true.
Ratcliffe’s profile grew when he emerged in 2019 as a vocal defender of Trump during the House’s first impeachment proceedings against the president.
He was a member of Trump’s impeachment advisory team and vigorously questioned witnesses during the hearings.
He also vigorously questioned former special counsel Robert Mueller when he testified before the House Judiciary Committee about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
