Haitian police and residents of Port-au-Prince killed 28 members of armed groups on Tuesday after an offensive in several neighborhoods of the capital, a police spokesman told the French news agency AFP.
Overnight, police intercepted a truck and a minibus carrying armed gang members in two neighborhoods, killing 10 of them on the spot, and chased and killed others along with local residents, according to Haitian National Police deputy spokesman Lionel Lazarre.
Local authorities and international organizations have already stated that about 80 percent of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti - the poorest country in the Americas and 158th out of 193 countries in the UN Human Development Index - is dominated by criminal groups.
Armed gangs trying to seize power in the country have already caused the deaths of almost 5,000 people in the first nine months of 2024, according to UN data.
The violence of armed groups has already displaced a total of 4,372 people, of which 3,586 in the capital, 488 in Tabarre and 298 in Delmas, according to figures released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
