Qatar Embassy in Damascus to Reopen "Soon"

Qatar announced today that it will reopen its embassy in Damascus "soon" following the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Gulf state "will soon reopen its embassy in the Syrian Arab Republic after taking the necessary measures," Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed-al Ansari said in a statement.

The move aims to "strengthen fraternal relations between the two countries" and "ensure coordination with the competent authorities to facilitate the humanitarian aid currently being provided to the Syrian people through an air bridge," he added.

Doha withdrew its ambassador to Damascus in July 2011 and closed its representation in the country after the uprising against the Syrian government turned into a civil war.

Unlike other Arab countries, Qatar has never reestablished relations with Bashar al-Assad, who was toppled on Sunday in an offensive by forces led by the Islamic extremist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
