A baby girl died a few hours after being born on January 31 in a hospital in Brescia, Italy. Three days later, the gynecologist who attended the birth died by suicide in Trento, without giving any explanation.
The case is being reported by several Italian media outlets and is shocking the country. The Brescia Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) has now opened two investigations to see if the stories are connected.
According to Il Giornale, the first tragedy happened on January 31. An Eastern European couple were admitted to a hospital in Desenzano del Garda, where the pregnant woman had a “long and difficult labor”, which led to the girl being transferred to Brescia's Civil Hospital.
Despite medical efforts, the girl did not survive. Death was declared a few hours after she was born.
There are few details about the baby's death. All that is known is that the newborn's parents filed a complaint against the health professionals who were in the delivery room and that the Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation into negligent homicide.
Three days later, on February 3, one of the 11 health professionals under investigation, aged 39, committed suicide without leaving a goodbye note.
Investigators are now trying to determine whether the tragedies are linked, since there are reports that the doctor was “very shaken” after the baby's death.
The authorities are currently awaiting the results of the autopsy on the newborn's body to determine the cause of death and whether there was medical negligence.
Subsequently, the Public Prosecutor's Office will also investigate the doctor's motives for taking her life.
