Russia Says It Shot Down 128 Ukrainian Drones in Southwest and Crimea

The Russian Defense Ministry said today it had shot down 128 Ukrainian drones over Crimea and the southwest of the country, in one of the biggest strikes against Russia since the invasion began.

Kyiv has stepped up airstrikes against military and energy facilities on Russian soil in recent months, a campaign carried out in response to Russia's bombing of Ukrainian cities and the power grid.

In a statement, the ministry said air defense forces "intercepted and destroyed 128 Ukrainian aerial drones overnight," including 83 over the southwestern Krasnodar region and 30 over the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014.

In addition to the Krasnodar region, known for its Black Sea resorts, drone strikes also targeted Russia's Bryansk and Kursk regions, which border Ukraine, the ministry said.

Neither Russian authorities nor the media have yet reported any significant damage linked to this drone attack.

Also today, authorities in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk province said at least one person was killed and 16 others were injured in a Russian attack.

Donetsk Governor Vadim Filashkin said on the Telegram messaging platform that the injured included four children aged between 8 and 17 and warned that "there are probably still people trapped under the rubble of the building as the search and rescue operation is ongoing".

Filashkin again called on the civilian population to withdraw "to the safest regions of Ukraine." "Withdrawal saves lives," he added.

Donetsk, along with Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhia --- all partially occupied during the invasion --- were annexed by Russia in October 2022, a move not recognized by the international community.
