Vatican Cancels Pope Francis' Saturday Audiences

The Vatican has canceled audiences with Pope Francis scheduled for Saturday, indicating that the leader of the Catholic Church will remain hospitalized at the Agostinho Gemelli clinic in Rome.

"Due to the continued hospitalization of the Holy Father, the Jubilee Audience on Saturday, March 1, has been canceled," the Vatican press service announced.

Francisco has been hospitalized since February 14 with pneumonia in both lungs. After some signs of worsening over the weekend, including increased breathing difficulties and kidney crisis, the clinical situation has been more stable.

According to the Vatican, the Pope slept well and continues to rest. According to the medical report released on Wednesday, the tomography performed to monitor bilateral pneumonia showed "normal evolution" of the lung condition.

"The Holy Father's clinical condition has shown a slight improvement in the last 24 hours. The mild renal insufficiency detected in recent days has resolved," according to the report.

Francisco, however, continues to receive high-flow oxygen therapy and is being treated with respiratory physiotherapy.

The "critical condition" indication from previous days also disappeared from Wednesday's report.

The 88-year-old pope was hospitalized due to bronchitis, and was later diagnosed with a polymicrobial infection, accompanied by bilateral pneumonia.

On Wednesday, the Pope announced the holding of a consistory to carry out canonizations, something that was seen by many as an opportunity to resign, as happened with Benedict XVI, who used a grand meeting of cardinals to announce his departure from office.

However, the announcement of a consistory, which has yet to be scheduled, is a formal requirement to conclude pending canonization processes, sources in the Vatican press office told Lusa.
