Human Rights Group Denounces Arrest of Ten Journalists in Türkiye

The Turkish human rights organization MLSA reported today that ten Turkish journalists were detained in Istanbul and the city of Izmir.

According to the same source, one of the ten journalists is a photographer for the French news agency France-Presse.

The journalists' arrests came a day after new protests sparked by the arrest of Istanbul's opposition mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu.

The mayor, who was removed from office and transferred to a prison on Sunday, has since been designated by the main opposition party as a candidate for Turkey's 2028 presidential election.

Imamoglu's arrest on Wednesday triggered a wave of protests unprecedented in Turkey since the movement that began in Taksim Square in 2013. Since Wednesday, demonstrations have been held in at least 55 of Turkey's 81 provinces.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of people gathered again at Istanbul City Hall, where there were clashes between protesters and police.

Authorities have banned all gatherings in the country's largest city until Wednesday night.
