The Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, which resumed on Tuesday after a two-month ceasefire, killed at least 43 more people and injured 82 others overnight, the Palestinian press reported today.
According to the Filastin newspaper, linked to the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, the director of the Indonesian Hospital said that "northern Gaza had a difficult night".
Marwan Sultan recalled that Israel "destroyed oxygen machines and other equipment needed" for medical treatment of the wounded.
"We are facing difficulties in responding to the needs of the huge number of wounded. The situation in Gaza is catastrophic, and the region is facing a genocide", added the doctor.
The newspaper reported that attacks also took place on the cities of Rafah and Khan Yunis, both in the south of the Gaza Strip, and on the Al-Bureij refugee camp, in the center.
The Israeli attacks had caused the death of at least 591 Palestinians and injured 1,042 in the last 72 hours, the government of the Gaza Strip, controlled by Hamas, said on Thursday night.
"Since the early hours of Tuesday until now, the Israeli occupation army has committed dozens of massacres in various areas of the Gaza Strip, through violent, targeted and unannounced aerial bombardments against civilian homes. This has caused the death of 591 Palestinians and injured another 1,042 who managed to reach hospitals," the government said in a statement.
In the statement, the government of Gaza also recalled that the percentage of children, women and elderly people killed exceeded 70% of the total deaths during this period, which is why it considers that Israel "continues to directly target civilians as part of a systematic crime of genocide."
"This brutal aggression reflects the occupation's premeditated intention to complete the genocide of our people in the Gaza Strip, with the support of the United States and shameful international silence," the text adds.
On the other hand, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered his troops on Thursday, after a meeting with senior defense officials, to "continue to intensify operations in Gaza," where "military pressure is already affecting Hamas' positions."
Also on Thursday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed his "deep disturbed" by the resumption of attacks in the Gaza Strip and their consequences for the return of hostages held there by Hamas, challenging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"It is unthinkable to resume fighting while the sacred mission of repatriating our hostages continues," added the head of state, a position to which he has no powers but which is generally respected.
