Mensik Stuns Djokovic to Claim First Career Title in Miami

Czech tennis player Jakub Mensik won his first career title on Sunday after defeating Serbian former world number one Novak Djokovic in the final of the Miami Masters 1000.

In a rain-affected match, Mensik defeated Djokovic, ranked fifth in the world, 7-6 (7-4) and 7-6 (7-4) in two hours and four minutes, a victory that allowed him to climb 30 places in the rankings, where he is now 24th.

“It wasn't the first time I'd played Novak. There's no tougher task than beating him in a final. I felt really good, I tried to stay focused on the match, as I did in the previous rounds,” he said.

At 19, Mensik is the second youngest winner of the Miami tournament, only beaten by Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who won in 2022 at the age of 18.

Mensik is also the first Czech in 20 years to win a Masters 1,000, after Thomas Berdych in Paris in 2005, and the fourth tennis player to win his first title in a tournament of this category.
