His father is one of the most hated men in the world, while his mother became a heroine.
David Pélicot is one of the victims of one of the sexual abuse cases that most shocked the world. In an interview with Sky News, she spoke about what it's like to live with the truth that changed her life forever.
"He was my father, but now he's not anymore. He's a monster," he said, referring to Dominique Pélicot, a man who allowed strangers to sexually abuse his wife, without her knowledge, for decades.
November 2, 2020 was the date David discovered the truth. Moments earlier, the police had met with his mother to tell her what they had discovered, and then Gisèle called her children.
"It's a moment that will remain etched in my memory forever," he said, recalling that his mother called him and asked him to go to a place where they could talk alone.
"What she told me was like a tsunami. I felt so many emotions inside me... I hung up the phone and felt like the ground had been ripped out from under my feet. I felt sick. I went to the bathroom and threw up," he continued.
David also recalled that his father was the one who "taught him to respect women", so when he learned the truth, it filled him with "anger and incomprehension".
Despite the outrage, David continues to use his father's surname and says that this is a choice that has allowed him to mourn his father's 'death'.
It is worth remembering that Dominique Pélicot was sentenced to the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. The defendant decided not to appeal the sentence.
