Two late goals consigned Everton to only their second defeat in 13 Premier League outings as Manchester City left Goodison Park as 2-0 winners.
In a tight contest from the first whistle, James Tarkowski went closest in the first half when he struck the post with a flicked header from James Garner's inviting corner.
Jarrad Branthwaite was then denied by a superb reaction save from City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega with the second half less than two minutes old.
But it was the reigning Premier League champions who struck the opener six minutes from time, when Nico O'Reilly turned in from inside the six-yard box after Matheus Nunes' cut-back.
Substitute Mateo Kovacic then thumped home a second for the visitors in stoppage time.
