Nkosi Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, is set to be deported by Israeli authorities following his detention during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
The flotilla, a humanitarian mission aiming to deliver aid to Gaza, was intercepted by Israeli naval forces on October 2, 2025.
While specific details regarding Mandela's deportation destination have not been publicly disclosed, Israel has initiated the deportation process for detained activists, including those from Italy and Turkey.
Prior to his detention, Mandela recorded a video message warning of the possibility of interception, urging the South African government to secure his release. He described the situation as an abduction by the Israeli military.
The interception of the flotilla has sparked widespread international criticism. President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the act as a violation of international law and an infringement on efforts to alleviate Gaza's humanitarian crisis.
Mandela's wife, Nosekeni Rabia Mandela, expressed deep concern over the lack of communication and information regarding her husband's whereabouts and well-being. The Mandela family has demanded his immediate release and return.
As of now, Israeli authorities have not provided specific details regarding the deportation process for Mandela and other detained activists.
