The first patient to receive a pig kidney, 62-year-old Richard Slayman, died on Saturday (11) in the United States. The transplant took place about two months ago. The death was announced by the family and the hospital. The information comes from the Associated Press news agency.
According to Massachusetts General Hospital, there is no indication that the death occurred as a result of the transplant. The family thanked the medical team.
“Your tremendous efforts leading the transplant gave our family seven more weeks with Rick, and our memories made during that time will remain in our minds and hearts,” reads an excerpt from the statement. The transplant with the genetically modified pig kidney took place in March this year.
