Death Toll Rises To 2 In Demonstration Against Kenyan Government

According to the committee, the 21-year-old protester was taken to hospital, but couldn't resist his injuries and died.

"It's tragic that a young man could lose his life simply because he was protesting against the rise in the cost of living," it said.

This is the second fatality recorded during the demonstrations against a new tax that began at the beginning of the week in Nairobi and have gradually spread to other cities.

The movement called "Occupy Parliament", responsible for these demonstrations, was launched on social media by young people.

The government's draft Finance Bill 2024 proposed new taxes such as a 16% VAT on bread or an increase in some existing taxes such as the mobile money transfer service.

However, the chairman of the National Assembly's Finance and Planning Committee, Kimani Kuria, announced on Tuesday that there will be changes and that some taxes will be eliminated.
