Portuguese Arrested in Switzerland After Explosion That Killed Two People

A Portuguese man was arrested on June 13th in Nussbaumen, in the Swiss canton of Aargau, following an explosion in an underground car park, which caused the death of two people.

According to the Aargau Public Prosecutor's Office, cited by the news website 20 Minuten, the explosion originated in a space located in an underground car park, where the two victims were.

Adrian Schuler, spokesman for the Aargau Public Prosecutor's Office, explained that the men had stored a large quantity of fireworks illegally imported from abroad, such as those used at large events. The investigation believes, in particular, that they were both great pyrotechnic enthusiasts and that they even tried to manufacture their own products, although they had no training.

It is believed that an unintentional ignition occurred during one of these attempts, which generated a chain reaction with the large quantity of pyrotechnic items in the space.

The men, a 43-year-old Italian man and a 24-year-old Swiss man, died at the scene of the accident.

That same day, a person went to the emergency services and declared that he was one of the tenants of the space where the material was located. This was a 33-year-old man, of Portuguese nationality, who ended up being temporarily detained.

The Portuguese was later released, after the authorities collected the relevant evidence for the case, and it is now unclear to what extent he was involved in the incident.

According to the Public Ministry, the Portuguese man was known to the two victims and is indicated as the presumed perpetrator of the explosion.

The Public Ministry also reported that there is no evidence of a terrorist background or a deliberate act. "Preliminary analyzes point only to incorrect handling and storage, but above all to completely involuntary behavior with dangerous substances, which resulted in a fatal accident", he concluded.
