Tennessee Signs Law Authorizing Death Penalty for Child Rape

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has quietly signed a law allowing the death penalty for those convicted of child rape as of July 1. The new legislation defies the guidance of the US Supreme Court, which has historically considered capital punishment unconstitutional for crimes short of murder.

This measure follows a trend started by Florida last year, while Idaho failed to advance a similar proposal. Tennessee's law also offers the alternative of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Experts suggest that such laws may be re-evaluated in the future.
