According to the Associated Press, prosecutors in Little Rock, Arkansas, US, filed murder charges against Deja and Justin Rollins on Monday after the boy's death.


The case dates back to Sunday afternoon, when police received an alert that the couple's four children - aged 2, 4, 7 and 10 - had been left inside a car in a parking lot.


The children were taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital for urgent treatment, but the 2-year-old died the following day, police said.


After searching the couple's home in Jacksonville, northeast of Little Rock, the authorities also found a malnourished dog.


In addition to the murder charges, Deja and Justin Rollins are also accused of domestic assault, child neglect and animal cruelty.
