At least 115 newborn babies have died in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli offensive against Hamas, health authorities in the enclave controlled by the Palestinian Islamist movement said today.
The most recent case is that of twins Aisel and Aisar Abu al Qumsan, born just four days ago, who according to the Palestinian media died together with their mother in an Israeli bombardment of their home, reports the Efe news agency.
The Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry said that the attack took place while the babies' father was going to obtain birth certificates for his two children.
Since the start of the war more than ten months ago, at least 16,456 minors have died in Israeli attacks, according to the latest figures from the Gaza authorities, which also estimate that 11,088 women have been killed.
Around 70 per cent of the almost 40,000 deaths that the Israeli offensive in the Palestinian enclave has already caused are women or children, according to the same source.
In addition, the Gaza authorities estimate that the bodies of around 10,000 missing people remain buried under rubble.
The Israeli army has not ceased its military offensive throughout the enclave and, since last Friday, has been carrying out a new ground incursion into Khan Younis, an important southern region that has historically been a Hamas stronghold.
The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas was triggered by an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist group on Israeli soil on 7 October 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and more than two hundred hostages, according to the Israeli authorities.
