At least six people died and 10 were injured after lightning caused a terrace to collapse in a park in the eastern Chinese city of Changzhou, local media reported today.
The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon when lightning struck the structure, where several people had been sheltering from the rain, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua said
Search and rescue work continued until the early hours of this morning, when emergency teams managed to pull out 16 people, who were taken to hospital.
The 10 injured are in a stable condition, the press added.
The local authorities have opened an enquiry to clarify the circumstances of the accident and have announced a review of public facilities in the area to ensure safety.
