Hamas has yet to confirm or deny the death of Mohammed Deif.
Israel announced Thursday that it had assassinated the leader of Hamas' military wing, Mohammed Deif, on July 13 in an attack on the town of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.
According to The New York Times, Hamas has yet to confirm or deny the death of Deif, who is believed to have masterminded the October 7 attacks. "Deif initiated, planned and executed the October 7 massacre," the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.
Israel said it had recently received additional information confirming the death of the leader of the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, but did not provide details.
The same US newspaper reported that the attack that led to Deif's death killed at least 90 other people, including displaced civilians.
One of the founders of Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, in the 1990s, Deif led the unit for decades. Under his command, it carried out dozens of suicide bombings against Israelis in buses and cafes and amassed an arsenal of rockets that could reach as far as the interior of Israel, which it did on several occasions.
Israel and Hamas have been at war since October 7, when the Islamist group invaded Israeli territory, killing more than 1,200 people and holding about 250 hostages, many still held hostage in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli government has sent troops into Gaza to fight Hamas, which claims that the Israeli retaliation has left more than 39,000 dead.
