In a statement, the European Commission announced the entry into force of the legislation, which is the first in the world for artificial intelligence.
The purpose of the law is to encourage the development of artificial intelligence, but to do so while taking into account the protection of the fundamental rights of EU citizens and the harmonisation of the use of this technology.
However, most of the rules in this legislation won't start to apply for another two years, but the bans on artificial intelligence systems that ‘pose an unacceptable risk’ to citizens ‘will apply within six months’.
The rules for the generalised application of artificial intelligence must be applied in 12 months' time.
Member states have until 2 August 2025 to designate the national authorities responsible for implementing this legislation and supervising compliance with it.
