Homicidal Inmate Escapes During Visit to Cyprus. Police Chief Fired

The fugitive was sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2011 murder of his wife, who was 24 weeks pregnant, and their four-year-old daughter.

The president of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on Sunday dismissed the chief of police, his deputy, and the acting director of a prison complex, following the escape of an inmate sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of murder.

According to The Associated Press (AP), the escape took place last week when the prisoner was under surveillance during an eight-hour outing to visit his family.

Cypriot government spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis said that the president decided to replace police chief Stylianos Papatheodorou and his deputy, Demetris Demetriou, after returning from New York, where he attended the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

The fugitive was identified as Doros Theophanous, a 42-year-old man who is serving a life sentence for the 2011 murder of his wife, who was 24 weeks pregnant, and their four-year-old daughter. He was arrested on Sunday after being recognized while shopping at a convenience store.

According to AP, citing the Cyprus Ministry of Justice, Theophanous was being guarded by three police officers and four prison guards while attending a family gathering at his home in Paphos. A 26-year-old man is also in police custody on suspicion of having helped the fugitive.
