Rockdale County, in Atlanta, Georgia, was plagued by an apocalyptic scenario on Sunday, following a fire that broke out in a chemical laboratory.
Residents were advised to stay indoors until midnight. Even so, as a chemical reaction resulted in a huge cloud over the area last night, those living near the BioLab were evacuated, reports NBC News.
A sprinkler broke down at 5 a.m., “causing a mixture with a water-reactive chemical” and a fire on the roof, said Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel.
The causes of the fire were being investigated, but the official confessed that the sprinkler system and the actions of the firefighters may have aggravated the chemical reaction due to the use of water.
The chemical material in question has not yet been identified. However, the company KIK Consumer Products confirmed that it had responded to the incident and said that the factory produces Clorox swimming pool cleaning products.
This line includes products made with chlorine in order to eliminate bacteria and algae, according to Clorox. Chlorine is unstable and, when released, can create a gaseous and toxic cloud, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It also reacts with water and other chemicals.
Although the fire has been contained, the chemical reaction will continue in the form of a cloud for “several days”, according to McDaniel.
He advised people to keep their doors and windows closed.
No injuries have been reported.
