Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday accused "Iran's allies" of attempting to assassinate him after a drone strike on his private residence in Caesarea was confirmed, and said they "will pay a heavy price."
"Iran's allies who attempted to assassinate me and my wife today made a regrettable mistake," Netanyahu said in a statement.
"I say to the Iranians and their partners in the axis of evil: whoever harms the citizens of the State of Israel will pay a heavy price," he added.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz also criticized "Iran's allies who attempted to assassinate" Benjamin Netanyahu, an attack that "shows the true face of Iran," he said.
"Iran's allies who attempted to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his family today have once again shown the true face of Iran and the axis of evil that he leads," Katz said in a separate statement.
Israel confirmed today that a drone (unmanned aerial vehicle) that struck Caesarea was aimed at Benjamin Netanyahu's private residence in that city, but that neither he nor any member of his family was in the house.
"A drone was launched against the prime minister's home in Kasarea. The prime minister and his wife were not at the scene and there were no injuries in the incident," said a statement from Benjamin Netanyahu's office, quoted by Efe.
A drone attributed to a Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah hit the Mediterranean coastal city in central Israel, with two others intercepted.
"In the last hour, three unmanned aerial vehicles were detected crossing Lebanon into Israeli territory. Two of them were intercepted and a third hit the Kasarea area," said a statement from the Israeli army.
Benjamin Netanyahu's holiday home in Caesarea has been the target of numerous protests by Israelis over the past two years.
