UK Sanctions Iranian Military Organizations Over Attack on Israel

The United Kingdom announced on Monday a new round of sanctions against Iran, which includes members of the military and organizations of that country, following the missile attack on Israel in early October.

The British Foreign Office stressed in a statement that London included in its sanctions list members of the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Iranian Air Force and the IRGC intelligence organization, among others.

It also included FPSDB, the Farzanegan Propulsion Systems design office, which designs and manufactures parts that can be used in cruise missiles, and the Iranian Space Agency, which develops technologies that have applications in the development of ballistic missiles, and whose assets will be frozen by the British government.

"Following the ballistic missile attack on Israel, we hold Iran accountable and expose those who facilitated these actions," stressed the head of the Foreign Office, David Lammy, quoted in the press release.

"Together with allies and partners, we will continue to take the necessary steps to challenge Iran's unacceptable threats and press for de-escalation across the region," the Labour politician added.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz today expressed his satisfaction with the measure and, in a statement, stressed that it sends "a clear message that the international community will not tolerate Iran's dangerous actions, its support for terrorism and its destabilization of the region".

The conflict in the Middle East has been going on for more than a year, since 7 October 2023, the date of Hamas' attack on Israel, which then launched a large-scale offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Over the past year, the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah has come out in support of its Palestinian ally and has been exchanging rocket fire on an almost daily basis with Israel, which intensified its attacks on southern Lebanon and the outskirts of Beirut in the last half of September.

The open war between Israel and Hezbollah saw new developments earlier this month, when Israeli forces launched a ground invasion of southern Lebanon.

In addition to Hamas and Hezbollah, Israel has also faced hostile actions from pro-Iranian militias in Syria and Iraq and the Yemeni armed group Houthis, also backed by Tehran.
