Brazil. Chief Justice Wants to Hold Those Who Attack Democracy Accountable

The President of Brazil's Supreme Court (STF) said today that the suicide attack on Wednesday night reinforces the need to hold accountable anyone who attacks democracy.

In a plenary session at the STF, a day after the suicide attack with an explosive device in front of the Supreme Court and a few meters from the presidential palace and Congress, Luís Barroso stressed that the attack adds to a series of incidents that have occurred in the country and culminated in the attacks by radical extremists on the seats of the Three Powers on January 8, 2023.

In his opinion, there is a “naturalization of the absurd” that encourages such behavior.

“They want to forgive without even condemning,” he said.

The attacker was identified as Francisco Wanderley Luiz, a 59-year-old locksmith who was once a councilor candidate for the Liberal Party (PL), a party now led by Jair Bolsonaro, who has already regretted and repudiated what happened.

On Wednesday night, the man tried to gain access to the Supreme Court and, when he couldn't, decided to throw explosive devices in front of the building and ended up dying.
