The Cape Verdean president today defended the use of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to speed up the judicial system's response to the population.
"When there are major advances in science and informational technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence, people no longer understand why it takes so long to resolve certain disputes and conflicts through the courts", he maintained.
José Maria Neves was speaking at the opening of the forum that brings together presidents of the Supreme Courts of Justice of Portuguese-speaking countries and territories, today and Thursday in the Cape Verdean capital.
The head of state considered it "essential" that "conditions are created for intelligent reforms of the system in order to guarantee its speed, quality and effectiveness, adapting it to current contexts and demands".
"Never like today, we need strong and independent Courts capable of resolving existing conflicts in society", he added.
If the Courts "are efficient in execution and effective in results, we will certainly have more peace and more inclusive political and economic institutions, guaranteeing more sustainable overall development", said José Maria Neves.
The Cape Verdean President classified the forum taking place in Praia as an "important" space for reflection on how to "successfully" face the challenges facing Justice.
The executive secretary of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), Zacarias da Costa, said that the forum will allow the exchange of experiences, taking advantage of the common language and legal culture, contributing to "strengthening the efficiency of the courts and creating of innovative solutions, adapted to the national realities of the member states".
At the opening of the event, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of Portugal, João Cura Mariano, defined the expectations: to contribute to the discovery of new paths and the adoption of measures that improve the functioning of Justice in each country.
Founded in 1996, the CPLP currently includes nine countries - Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste - and all are present at the meeting.
