Obama's Family Files Lawsuit Against School Accused of Discrimination

Michelle Obama's brother and his wife have settled a lawsuit they filed in 2022 alleging that a private school in Milwaukee had refused to enroll their children.

At issue was the fact that this refusal was made after the couple expressed concerns about racism and inappropriate behavior at school.

Craig and Kelly Robinson alleged in the complaint that the University School of Milwaukee (USM) had canceled contracts for the enrollment of their children, aged nine and 11, for the 2021-2022 school year after the couple complained that teachers negatively discriminated against students of color and socioeconomic classes that were underrepresented.

The couple specified that when the boys were at home learning, using virtual channels, given the new coronavirus pandemic situation, they noticed the presence of racial and ethnic stereotypes in the work they had to do.

School leaders said at the time that enrollment decisions had nothing to do with the complaints.

But USM Principal Steve Hancock told the couple in the termination letter and in an email that they had repeatedly engaged in disrespectful communications with teachers and administrators.

When the complaint was filed, he issued a statement assuring that enrollment decisions were not about complaints about inequalities or discrimination.

But, Hancock added that the school did not tolerate "persistent disrespectful, aggressive or harassing behavior" directed at teachers and principals.

Court records available online revealed that Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Thomas McAdams dismissed the case on Thursday.

The Robinsons and the school issued a joint statement saying they have resolved the issue and regret that the disagreement resulted in the couple's children not being enrolled. The text also specifies that these children were "model students".

Terms of the agreement were not revealed. The Robinsons had demanded unspecified compensation.
