Whoopi Goldberg Launches 1st Women's Sports Television Channel

Whoopi Goldberg launched the world's first global women's sports channel. In an episode of 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' broadcast last week, Goldberg described the AWSN (All Women's Sports Network) channel as a home for live women's sports from around the world.

"Everything. From football, basketball, tennis, cricket, curling, whatever - if a woman is playing, we will show it," he concluded on the program.

AWSN has partnered with CommonSpirit, a Chicago-based network of Catholic hospitals that, according to Goldberg, “really promotes women’s health.”

The channel has already launched in some regions of Asia - including India - the Middle East, and is expected to launch in the US this week, broadcasting live women's sports matches.

Goldberg, who co-hosts 'The View' and is currently on Broadway playing Mrs Hannigan in the musical 'Annie', revealed that she has always been an active athlete, but that her gender prevented her from pursuing that career.

"That's always pissed me off. So for years I've been asking people, 'Wouldn't it be great if we could travel the world, start having young athletes in high school so we could grow with them?'"

The world of women's professional sports has gradually gained strength in recent years, with record television audiences for women's sports in 2023, with the rise of professional women's teams, with lucrative sponsorships and with companies that promote and normalize the audience for this type of sport, such as the Ladies League at Darlinghurst, which opened in August.

Goldberg's idea to create an all-female sports channel had been in the works for 16 years. The actress hopes the network will encourage people to celebrate women and their athletic achievements.
