Nine-Year-Old Girl Dies After Dental Surgery in the U.S.

A nine-year-old child died after going to the dentist for an operation and being anesthetized. It happened in California, United States.

NBC San Diego, which quotes the coroner's report, writes that after the surgery, the girl went to a “recovery room” and was then discharged. On the way home, she fell asleep.

Once home and still asleep, the girl's parents decided to check on her and realized that she wasn't responding. They called 911 (112, in Portugal) and the fire department transported the child to hospital, where doctors eventually pronounced her dead.

According to the local television station, it is not yet known whether the dental procedure could be related to the girl's death, since the medical report still lists the cause of death as pending.

The dental clinic also issued a statement expressing its regret at the death of the nine-year-old girl.

“The patient was referred for dental treatment under general anesthesia due to her age and anxiety. During the procedure, she was monitored by our dentist-anesthetist,” it read.

The clinic, in the name of Dr. Ryan Watkins, also said that “after the procedure, she [the girl] was discharged and was stable - awake, with vital signs and protective reflexes intact”.
