Russia Claims Recapture of Largest City in Russian Region of Kursk

A statement from the Russian Defense Ministry said that during the offensive actions, units from the Sever military grouping (North) liberated the towns of Melovoi, Podol and Sudja, the largest Ukrainian-controlled town in Kursk.

Moscow's announcement was made via social media a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the troops deployed in Russia's Kursk region.

Ukrainian forces have suffered more than 340 casualties, including dead and wounded, in the fighting over the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of casualties since the start of the incursion to 67,150, according to Moscow,

Kiev has yet to comment on the casualties suffered in the latest clashes.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov said that the army had told Putin that the final phase of the counter-offensive in Kursk had begun with the aim of liberating the territory from entrenched Ukrainian militiamen.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces launched an offensive against the Kursk region at the beginning of August 2024 to counter Moscow in the midst of the war launched by Putin in February 2022.

Kiev came to control around 1,200 square kilometers and more than a hundred towns, prompting the Russian Army to divert part of its contingent and military resources to fight Ukrainian soldiers in Russia.
