Pope Francis has died

Pope Francis died on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, due to complications from bilateral pneumonia. He died at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, he was the first Jesuit pope and the first non-European pontiff in more than 1,200 years. His papacy, which began in 2013 after the resignation of Benedict XVI, was marked by a reformist and socially engaged approach.

During his 11-year pontificate, Francis promoted reforms in the Roman Curia, fought corruption, strengthened the protection of minors, and adopted more inclusive stances toward diverse groups. He was also an advocate for interreligious dialogue and addressed environmental issues in encyclicals such as "Laudato si'."

The death of Pope Francis leaves the Catholic Church with the task of choosing his successor. Details of the funeral rites and the conclave that will elect the new pontiff have not yet been released.
