Convicted of Sex Crimes Denies Trying to Kidnap Child in Aveiro



A 62-year-old man, with a criminal record for sexual crimes with minors, today denied in court that he had tried to kidnap a 4-year-old child during the La Salette parties, in Oliveira de Azeméis, in the district of Aveiro.


The defendant, who is in pre-trial detention, began to be tried this afternoon at the Santa Maria da Feira Court for the crime of attempted kidnapping.


Questioned by the panel of judges, the defendant said that he was at La Salette parties when he was approached by a child who pulled his shirt and said something that sounded like "a coin".


"I said I didn't have any coins and I pushed her. I didn't pick up the child. I just touched her to get her away from me and I went on my way," said the defendant.


During the same session, the Court heard from a woman who said she found the defendant "staring at the boy".


The witness, who stated that he knew the defendant's criminal record, said that he "made a sign with his hand to call the boy" and began to take him through the front garden, towards an unlit area.


The woman also said that, at that time, she followed the two of them and told the child not to go with that man because he "wasn't trustworthy", having then taken the boy to his parents and called the GNR to arrest the suspect. .


The events occurred on August 8, 2023, at 00:30, in the place where the festivities in honor of Our Lady of La Salette were taking place.


According to the MP's indictment, the defendant saw a 4-year-old child playing next to his parents' tent, and called her to him, and then offered the boy a euro to accompany him home, in order to satisfy his needs. libidinous desires.


At that time, the defendant was intercepted by a woman who prevented him from following his intentions, taking the child to his parents.


When the events occurred, the defendant, who has previous convictions for sexual crimes involving minors, was on probation and was also subject to an additional penalty of removal from contact with children.
