The four-month exercise, called Steadfast Defender 2024, was NATO's first large-scale exercise to put into practice the new regional defense plans adopted last year at the leaders' summit in Vilnius, the Atlantic Alliance said in a statement.
NATO indicated that the exercise aimed to promote preparedness in all areas and levels of command, from strategic to operational and tactical.
“Designed to train and demonstrate the Alliance's ability to reinforce continental Europe through the transatlantic movement of forces from North America and the United Kingdom, ‘Steadfast Defender’ consisted of several NATO-led and national-level exercises that brought together allied troops in an impressive display of unity and interoperability,” the transatlantic organization said.
The Alliance's commander for Europe, US General Christopher G. Cavoli, said that the military activities carried out during the exercise demonstrated that NATO “is capable and prepared to fulfill the core mission of collective defense”.
The exercise took place in two parts. The first focused on the maritime domain and involved several headquarters that rehearsed the strategic deployment of forces from North America to continental Europe.
The second part was a demonstration of national, multinational and NATO military capabilities across continental Europe.
