"The Humanity 1 crew rescued a total of 100 people, including pregnant women and babies, from two overcrowded and distressed vessels in the central Mediterranean," revealed the NGO on its social media, cited by the Spanish news agency EFE.
In the first rescue, the team saved 82 people who were in a boat and in the second another 18, with "half of the people rescued being minors", adds the organization.
The Italian authorities asked the NGO to go to the port of Livorno, which is around 1,170 kilometers from the rescue area, so that the migrants could disembark, the NGO further reported.
"The crew and rescued people will now have to face at least three more days of travel. By designating such a distant port, the authorities are knowingly violating the survivors' right to rapid disembarkation, as indicated in maritime law", he accused .
The captain has already asked the Italian rescue coordination center to assign a closer port, especially because having to travel so many kilometers ends up moving away from the usual rescue areas.
EFE recalls that the decision to assign distant posts has been the policy of Giorgia Meloni's far-right government to remove NGOs from the rescue zone.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours, around 150 migrants arrived on the island of Lampedusa after being rescued by the Guardia di finanza in several operations.
The boats, which departed from Tunisia, also carried two women and 17 minors, who said they came from Egypt, Sudan, Syria and Tunisia.
The improvement in the weather increases the number of people trying to reach Europe via the Italian coasts, which this year saw 19,592 migrants arrive, a number well below that recorded in the same period last year (47,851 migrants), according to data released today by the Ministry of the Italian countryside.
