The nine dead were part of a 22-person expedition that got stuck on a mountain in Uttarakhand state on Monday while returning to camp, Krishna Byre Gowda, finance minister of Karnataka state, where the trekkers were from, said on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
“At 14:00 local time (09:30 Lisbon time), the weather worsened with snow and winds” and a blizzard began, Gowda added, adding that the trekkers spent the night in the open and only managed to contact the authorities for help the following day.
The authorities rescued 13 people and found the lifeless bodies of five hikers on Wednesday, joined by four more bodies found today by rescue teams, the minister said.
The survivors were taken to a nearby hospital, said the Indian Air Force, which was involved in the rescue operations.
