Indian Prime Minister Hails Trump's “Historic Victory”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Donald Trump on his “historic victory” in the US presidential elections, despite the fact that the votes are still being counted.

“I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the (...) global and strategic partnership” between India and the United States, Modi said on social media, according to the French news agency AFP.

“We will work together to improve the condition of our peoples and promote peace, stability and prosperity in the world,” added the head of the ultra-nationalist Hindu government.

During Trump's first term in office (2017-2021), the US billionaire and the Indian prime minister, in power since 2014, have maintained a relationship of trust.

The two leaders publicly praised each other in 2019, during a joint appearance in Houston (Texas), in front of tens of thousands of Americans of Indian origin.

A year later, Narendra Modi welcomed Donald Trump at a huge rally in his home state of Gujarat (northwest).

Last month, Trump praised the qualities of the Indian prime minister in a podcast followed by millions of listeners.

“He's my friend,” said Trump.

“He gives the impression of being your father. He's the sweetest man,” he added.

Donald Trump, 78, has already claimed victory in Tuesday's elections, although the final results have yet to be confirmed.

According to US media projections, Trump is three electoral votes short of the 270 needed to return to the White House (presidency).

“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th President,” he told supporters at the Palm Beach Convention Center in Florida.
