Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, son of the President of the Republic, will be accused in the case of Portuguese-Brazilian twins with spinal muscular atrophy treated at Santa Maria Hospital, in Lisbon.
According to CNN Portugal, in addition to Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, the parents of the two children will also be appointed.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's son, who is living in Brazil, is expected to be interrogated when he returns to Portugal.
The information, which Notícias ao Minuto is trying to confirm with the Attorney General's Office (PGR), comes one day after the Judiciary Police (PJ) carried out searches at the Ministry of Health, the Santa Maria Hospital and facilities at the Social Security and it was made public that the former Secretary of State for Health, António Lacerda Sales, was accused at the beginning of the week.
A note from the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) published on the website of the Lisbon Regional Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP), explained that facts are at stake that could constitute a "crime of malfeasance, in apparent competition with that of abuse of powers, a crime of abuse of power in accordance with the Penal Code and qualified fraud".
The basis of the investigation is the treatment in 2020 of two twins living in Brazil, who acquired Portuguese nationality, with the drug Zolgensma. With a total cost of four million euros (two million euros per person), this drug aims to control the spread of spinal muscular atrophy, a neurodegenerative disease.
The case was publicized by TVI last November and is still being investigated by the Attorney General's Office (PGR), with the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS) having already concluded that access to neuropediatric consultation for these children was illegal. .
An internal audit of Hospital Santa Maria also concluded that the scheduling of a first hospital appointment by the State Department of Health was the only exception to compliance with the rules in this case.
On December 4 last year, following TVI reports about this case, the President of the Republic confirmed that his son, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, contacted him by email in 2019 about the situation of the two twins.
On that occasion, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reported correspondence exchanged at the Presidency of the Republic in response to his son, sent to the Attorney General's Office, and argued that he gave this case "the most neutral order", like so many others, forwarding this dossier to the Government.
The commission of inquiry into the case of the twins treated with the drug Zolgensma has already scheduled the start of hearings for June 17th, with testimony from António Lacerda Sales.
